What we’ll do: Work the 12 Steps of Sexaholics Anonymous (SA) to achieve a spiritual awakening and gain freedom from lust obsession and sexual compulsion.
Who should attend: Anyone who wants to stop their lust-driven addiction, obsession or compulsion.
What to bring: Just yourself! Workbooks, clipboards, pens, paper, refreshments and buffet lunches will all be provided.
“Having led 12 Step Workshops in twenty two countries, seeing thousands of SA men and women having spiritual awakenings, I’m looking forward to returning to the country where it all began and leading this workshop in Portland, OR. I’m grateful to SA Portland Metro for the opportunity”.
Nicholas S, sober in SA since April 1995
7 pm – 8.30 pm
With prayers, readings from the AA Big Book, exercises and sharing we’ll move briskly through Steps 0-3. Self-service food and soft drinks will be available throughout.
8.30 pm – 9 pm
Instructions will be given on how to complete your 4th Step in two hours. This writing will need to be completed before 10 am on Saturday morning and is best done alone and in silence. The workshop room will be available for a further hour, until 10 pm tonight, for those who wish to begin writing immediately and will open two hours early, at 8 am tomorrow, for those who wish to make use of it then. Silence is requested.
Overnight – between 9 pm on Friday 14th and 10 am on Saturday 15th
Two hours only are recommended for this writing, which can be done at your convenience, at home or in the workshop space (see above). Silence is requested during this phase. Only those who have completed this writing will be able to move ahead at 10 am on Saturday. The workshop space will be open from 8 am for participants who wish to come early and work silently on their 4th Step.
10 am – 10:15 am
Here Higher Power will be pairing us up so we can begin sharing what we have written in our 4th Steps. Don’t worry about which partner you’ll get. Years of experience prove that we find ourselves working with exactly the right partner.
10:15 am – 12:15 pm
As well as sharing our 5th Steps we’ll begin assembling the list of defects which we’ll be surrendering in Steps 6 and 7. Refreshments will be available throughout the morning.
12:15 – 1:30 pm
Using the lists of Defects and Assets which we prepared earlier, we will check our readiness to complete our Step 7 surrender and then go for it. A buffet lunch will be served during this time. You are welcome to continue working with your partner meanwhile.
1.30 – 3 pm
Our Step 8 list will be largely completed here, though there may be more names to add later. We’ll learn some best practices about amends making and actually make our first indirect amend. Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon.
3 – 6 pm
Each of these three maintenance Steps will be practiced, using tried and tested tools. Participants will leave the workshop knowing how to work these crucial steps on a daily basis.
6 pm
Those wishing to will be welcome to stay on for an extra hour – to share, ask questions or delve a little deeper into any of the 12 Steps – until 7 pm.
To have a spiritual awakening through working the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous as applied to your lust-driven addiction, obsession or compulsion in 12 hours. Workshop participants usually experience a profound change in their thinking, feelings, attitudes and beliefs.
Over the two days, Steps 1-8 will be completed, Step 9 will be begun but not finished and Steps 10, 11 & 12 will be practised. After the workshop, it is recommended that participants complete Step 9 with their sponsor, as soon as possible, and continue to practise Steps 10, 11 & 12 on a daily basis. It is strongly recommended that participants begin taking others through the 12 Steps as soon as possible after the workshop ends.
As described in the book Alcoholics Anonymous, the 12 Steps are a series of actions, which include praying, meditating, writing and sharing. All such actions are voluntary. Participants may baulk at any of the Steps, though this is not recommended. Anyone who does, is welcome to remain in the workshop – as an observer – or to leave, as preferred.
Anyone who has a desire to stop their particular lust-related addiction, obsession or compulsion. Please note that materials prepared on Day One will be needed in order to complete Day Two.
Until 9 June, your two day pass will cost $25. After 9 June, passes can still be purchased for $40.
If you are struggling to pay please let us know via email. We may be able to help.
The Steps can only be done in their correct order, so it is essential to attend all sessions on time. Missed Steps cannot be caught up once the group has moved on. The Step work itself takes 12 hours.
Please attend the workshop dressed modestly and gain consent before touching others. All activities are voluntary.
100 people is an ideal number for the room.
A desire to quit your lust-driven addiction, obsession or compulsion. Ideally, you should already be participating in SA, have obtained a sponsor, have completed a written Step One on powerlessness over your lust problem and have shared this with others in your SA home group, but complete beginners are welcome too.
Anyone who believes they can still control their lust-related addiction, obsession or compulsion or who wants to go on practicing it.
Every effort will be made to protect your privacy although there can be no guarantees. Your anonymity is yours to guard or to give away. If you wish to let other participants know your real first name and the 12 Step Fellowship(s) to which you belong, please feel free but you are under no obligation to do so. You can use a nickname if you prefer. Your own Step work will be done individually, in pairs and in small groups. Question periods are normally confined to clarifying the next task to be completed.
These 24 page A4 documents, into which your Step work is written, will be provided on arrival.
[If you’d prefer to work your Step 1 on something besides lust, please choose another workbook more suitable for you, download it and then print it double sided on 12 sheets of A4 paper. You will be able to follow the workshop using whichever workbook you have chosen.]
Relevant passages from the Big Book Alcoholics Anonymous and from Dr Bob and the Good Oldtimers will be read aloud during the workshop. You do not need to have these books to hand.
The workshop will not be recorded. Previous workshop recordings can be found here.
